Regular Bitcoin Exchanges

On a regular exchange, you fund your account with fiat currency and then use that to purchase Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies like Ether, Litecoin and XRP. You are also able to 'cash in' your Bitcoins, convert them back to your own country's currency and transfer that back to your bank account. As an interface with the establishment banks, they are often regulated, but not always.

Crypto-to-Crypto Exchanges

These exchanges allow you to trade different types of cryptocurrencies. So, you may want to exchange your bitcoins for another currency like Ethereum or Litecoins. You may also want to go the other way around and trade your Ethereum/Litecoins into bitcoins.

Cash to Bitcoins

These are exchanges where you can take your regular fiat cash, like dollars, euros, pounds or yen, and trade them directly for bitcoins not using your bank account
